Let’s talk seaweed – that humble, paper-thin green wrap you probably associate with sushi rolls. Did you know it's actually a nutrient-dense, sustainable superfood? At Ceres Organics, we’ve always believed in the power of good food to do good things, for both people and for the planet. That’s why we’re proud to have been the original provider of organic seaweed snacks in New Zealand.
A seaweed story – From South Korea to your snack shelf
A seaweed story – From South Korea to your snack shelf
Our seaweed has a special origin story. It’s sourced from the pristine waters off Seocheon, on South Korea’s southern coast. Picture this: crystal-clear blue waters dotted with immaculate, dark green grids of seaweed, swaying gently in the current. This stunning marine landscape is not only visually striking, it’s also protected within a National Park, ensuring strict environmental controls are in place to safeguard biodiversity and water quality. You can find out more about our seaweed farmers here.

The seaweed we use is known locally as gim, or more widely as nori, a high-grade, edible red algae that dries into that familiar green snack sheet. It’s certified organic, which is a big deal when you understand how seaweed works.
Why organic seaweed matters
Why organic seaweed matters
Seaweed is like nature’s sponge—it soaks up the minerals around it, which is great for nutrition, but potentially not-so-great if it’s grown in polluted waters. In non-organic or poorly regulated waters, seaweed can take up harmful substances, including, in some cases, trace levels of radiation. Contaminants can accumulate in seaweed tissue, and while the levels are often small, regular consumption from questionable sources may pose health risks.
Choosing certified organic seaweed is not just a health-conscious move, it’s a necessary one. Not only is our seaweed is harvested in clean, protected waters, we go one step further with regularly testing to ensure its purity and safety.
When it comes to cultivating our beloved seaweed, our organic process is completely chemical-free: instead of using chemical agents to remove moss and debris (as conventional producers do), we rely on the natural forces of sunlight and wind to do the job. Though this process requires more time and effort, it preserves the natural integrity of the seaweed, ensuring a cleaner and more nutrient-rich product.
A snack that loves our planet
A snack that loves our planet
Seaweed is more than a nutrition powerhouse, it’s incredibly planet-friendly too. Unlike traditional land-based agriculture, seaweed doesn’t need freshwater or fertilisers. It’s one of the fastest-growing crops in the world and pulls carbon dioxide from the atmosphere at rates up to an incredible 20 times more than trees, thereby playing a key role in the fight against climate change! By absorbing carbon dioxide, seaweed also helps balance pH levels in the ocean, reducing acidification that threatens coral reefs, shellfish, and other marine organisms.
Seaweed plays a crucial role in maintaining the health of our oceans and supporting marine biodiversity. Acting as underwater forests, it provides shelter for marine life, supporting a rich and diverse marine ecosystem, and helping to restore populations. It can also help stabilise coastal ecosystems by reducing wave energy, preventing shoreline erosion, and protecting marine habitats.

You see, seaweed is more than a delicious snack, it actively restores environmental balance.

What makes nori such a good snack?
Nori is packed with an extraordinary array of nutrients, especially iodine, a vital mineral most of us don’t get enough of. Iodine is key for keeping your thyroid (and therefore, your energy and metabolism) running smoothly. That’s why there’s an old Japanese saying: “Two sheets of nori a day keep the doctor away.” We couldn’t agree more.
But nutrition aside, nori just tastes amazing. That natural ‘umami’ flavour makes it the perfect addition to your meals — sprinkle it over rice bowls, salads, or ramen, or simply snack on it straight from the pack, chip-style.
